On September 20, more than 100 Aramark associates will volunteer to support Queens Community House (QCH), on Aramark Building Community Day (ABC Day), the company’s global day of service.
Council Member Rory Lancman (D-Fresh Meadows) is encouraging his constituents to sign their children up for Queens Community House Pomonok Center summer programs, following his $9,000 in funding for the activities.
“I grew up in the Pomonok Houses and when I was eligible to join a senior center, I knew I had to come to the Pomonok Senior Center. I’ve made so many friends and I love the trips we take. We have exercise classes and singing classes, and I feel like they just keep us going.
“I’ve been a part of this neighborhood since I was little. I live in the building right next to the Pomonok Community Center, so I’ve been volunteering and helping out here for as long as I can remember.
Our Pomonok Senior Center participants had their art displayed in Resort World Casino's Red Wall Gallery. The exhibit called "Life Reimagined" shows a variety of oil paintings by 14 seniors from the Pomonok Senior Center in Flushing.
"I worked at John Adams High School for 18 years and I was Dean for six of those years. But I had to retire early to work on recovering from cancer. I was depressed, but then I found the Pomonok Senior Center and I started feeling really inspired.
In order for communities to grow, people have to be willing to invest in the seeds of change. Today, twenty-five volunteers from Aramark demonstrated their commitment to building community by restoring 15 garden beds at Queens Community House’s Pomonok Center in Flushing.
"I’ve been coming to the Pomonok Senior Center for 31 years. I came specifically for the art classes. I never did any art before this. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to do real art, but now I’ve made more than 100 paintings.
