Meet Your Neighbor: Anita Gerkin

I am the primary caregiver for my mom, who has short-term dementia and my brother, who has vision trouble and can’t care for himself.  Caring for everyone is in my nature. It can be overwhelming sometimes, but my family needs me.

When I do need to talk it out, the Caregiver Support Group at Pomonok’s Senior Center is there for me. We talk about our challenges, we share resources, and we support each other during challenging times. It’s an outlet for me.

The Pomonok Community Center has supported me and my family for the 30 years I’ve lived here. Years ago, my children went to the afterschool program, so I could work. My grandson went the camp when he visited. These days, when I need a little break for myself, I volunteer at the Farmers Market and attend the Senior Center activities, like cooking and exercising. You have to treat yourself when you have so much on your plate.
