Local Queens Church Recognized for its Work in Homelessness

Forest Hills, NY (April 24, 2018) - Queens Community House will honor Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church with the Local Champion Award at its Annual Spring event, celebrating leaders for their dedicated work in philanthropy and community development.

The event will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the historical West Side Tennis Club. For more than a decade, Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church has helped QCH organize food drives, toy drives during the holiday season, and in the past year assisted in the development of an evening food pantry.

Nationally, the United States is undergoing an extensive homelessness epidemic, with a 9% increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness, according to an Annual Assessment Report by the U.S. Department of Housing and Development. New York alone, has one of the highest homelessness rates accounting for 16% of the national amount, an estimated number of 89,503 people detailed in the same report. For over 35 years, The Housing and Homelessness Prevention Program at QCH has aimed to curb these numbers by addressing the needs of different households and educating tenants on their rights and responsibilities. Together, with the support of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church, the program has serves as a success with more than 2,100 families served per year.

The evening will consist of networking and socializing over hors d'oeuvres, wine, beer and desserts from 6pm to 8pm. The organization will also award Adolfo Steve Vazquez, founder of Queenscapes.nyc, with their 2018 Queens Community Builder Award.
