“I joined Queens Connect at a moment when I was trying to figure out what came next. After graduating in 2022, I knew I needed more experience and skills to build my resume and transition into adulthood with confidence. When I heard about QCH’s Queens Connect Culinary Arts program, I was interested right away. I enjoy cooking, and it felt like an opportunity I could grow from.
Still, I went in with hesitation. I was used to hearing about opportunities that excited me at first but then led me to pause because of my disability. I often ask myself, ‘Will they allow me to participate, or will my disability be an issue for them?’ From the very beginning, Queens Connect put those fears at ease. I was open about my disability during the interview process, and instead of doubt, I was met with understanding and support.
On my first day in the kitchen, Chef Rob was really patient with me from the moment I started, and I quickly made connections with many peers, which put me at ease. That set the tone for the entire program. I felt welcomed, supported, and encouraged to learn. I built real culinary skills, made lasting friendships, and gained confidence in myself.
Being recognized at QCH’s Milestone Ceremony alongside other youth workforce participants was a powerful moment. Hearing how my growth had impacted others showed me that simply showing up and pushing myself mattered. Queens Connect gave me confidence in myself and showed me that there are good work opportunities out there for me, where I can be creative and showcase my skills.
After completing the program, I added Queens Connect to my resume and soon after began working as an Events Assistant at LaGuardia Community College. Queens Connect wasn’t just job training — it was a turning point that helped me believe in my own potential.”
