Meet Your Neighbor: Miriam Elkhouly

“I was a lawyer in my home country, Peru. When the political climate changed, I lost my job and found it very difficult to find another position.  As someone who is passionate about making an impact, this was a challenge for me, so I decided to leave Peru. I moved to New York City and found a job working in a party decoration store. For years I worked hard and gained new skills.  When I left the workforce to support my family, I continued doing volunteer work at my children's school and within my community.  After years of taking care of my family, I decided to apply for a position in the Adult Education Program at the Queens Community House.

“I coordinate the ESOL program in Forest Hills where I serve as a support system for the students and teachers, in addition to other responsibilities. Our English classes help students get involved with their communities and find better jobs. It’s amazing how many people from different countries come to QCH. All the students are humble and kind, and they appreciate the support of our teachers.

"I was once a student like the participants who attend our program.  I know how badly they want to learn English and create a different life in this country. I see them thrive and, just like me, go on to open new possibilities in their lives.
