Community Centers

The Forest Hills Community Center (FHCC) opened in 1976 and was QCH’s original program site. It is part of the NYCHA Forest Hills Coop housing development. While primarily serving the surrounding neighborhoods of Forest Hills, Rego Park, and Corona, FHCC also draws participants from across the borough for programs such as its LGBT Teen Center (Generation Q), free English classes and immigration services, and renowned Social Adult Day Services program. More than 500 neighbors pass through the center on a typical day, as it transforms itself from a senior center in the morning to an after school site in the afternoon and a Teen Center in the evening (the Teen Center’s breakdancing program has been known to attract visitors from as far away as Japan, Colombia, and Germany). FHCC also hosts neighborhood forums, concerts, and an annual Youth Leadership Conference, and can be rented out for family or community events.

Queens Community House took over operation of the Pomonok Community Center (PCC) in 2006. PCC is located on the campus of Pomonok Houses, a NYCHA housing development that is home to more than 4,000 residents. PCC is host to a senior center, after school program, and, in the summer months, a camp and teen program. We seek to achieve measurable improvements in the lives of individuals and families living in Pomonok through community engagement and holistic service provision.

When QCH began operations of PCC, more than 50% of survey respondents rated health as a programmatic priority. This prompted what has become multi-faceted health and wellness initiative at the site that now reaches 1,500 people annually. Services includes a weekly community-run farmers market (operating July-November), a food box program, a Food Justice Youth Leadership program, community gardens, and a series of "Cooking and Eating Together" activities and communal potlucks.

The Kew Gardens Community Center (KGCC) was established in 1996 thanks to the efforts of local residents who advocated for a community center to serve the surrounding neighborhood. Its initial program was the Kew Gardens Senior Center, whose innovative peer-led education model offers active older adults opportunities to teach and take classes on a variety of subjects. The program also offers theater and museum trips and hosts choral, creative writing and theater groups for its members.

KCC is also host to our Senior Case Management staff and our Caregiver Support program, and serves as an event and meeting space for the several local organizations.

Beacon programs are school-based community centers serving children age six and older, and adults. QCH operates three Beacon programs:

• Russell Sage Junior High School (J.H.S. 190) in Forest Hills
• Elizabeth Blackwell Junior High School (J.H.S. 210) in Ozone Park
• Christa Mcauliffe School (P.S. 149) in Jackson Heights

QCH's Beacon program provides free, year-round programming for youth ages 6-21 with a particular focus on leadership development and skill building. Our Beacon also includes an afterschool program for middle school students, Saturday programming for elementary school children, and evening programming for teens. The Beacon is also available for use by community members and groups.
