Queens Community House Receives Algorhythm’s HI Impact Award in Youth Development

April 12, 2018 (Queens, NY) — Queens Community House (QCH) has been recognized as a recipient of Algorhythm’s 2018 HI Impact Award. The award, given to programs and organizations demonstrating exceptional success in youth development, reflects QCH's commitment to serving youth in the borough of Queens. Executive Director Ben Thomases said, “QCH has long been recognized in the city for its strong youth development programming, and I’m thrilled to see our organization recognized at the national level as well.”

The HI Impact Award is given by Algorhythm, a leader in youth development program evaluation. Algorhythm used predictive modeling to study more than 4,000 youth across the nation and identify youth who demonstrated exceptional growth in social and emotional learning (SEL) over the course of a program year. SEL is increasingly understood as the key to a young person’s development because it strongly predicts success in school, work, and life.

QCH, established in 1975, serves over 6,000 young people in Queens each year through 28 unique programs. In multiple programs, more than one in five of their youth demonstrated exceptional growth - outperforming 85% of the 150 programs in Algorhythm’s Youth Development Impact Learning System during the 2016/2017 school year.  Findings suggest that these programs are genuinely helping young people learn the skills they need to succeed in life. “Our highest performing programs build relationships with our participants over a period of time,” said QCH’s Associate Executive Director of Youth Services, Helena Ku. “Youth come in for one service, like Evening Teen Center, and they are connected to job opportunities, academic support, and counseling services.”

Algorhythm plans to use the award to begin deeper discussions about effective practices in youth development. “We’re very excited to be working with Queens Community House and all of our HI Impact Award winners to find ways for youth workers, funders, and policymakers to learn from their exemplary work,” said Dr. Kim Sabo Flores, Chief Executive Officer of Algorhythm.
